Kynam (奇楠) is the rarest tier of agarwood — exceptionally high resin saturation, a cool-sweet multi-layered scent profile, and historically only available through wild harvest. OudLink develops grafted Kynam stock through a research partnership with South China Agricultural University, allowing semi-controlled cultivation of varieties that previously appeared only in the wild. What is Kynam?
Kynam (奇楠) is the most prized form of agarwood — the resin so dense it sinks in water, with a complex, sweet, lingering profile that traditional oud cannot match.
In nature, Kynam forms only by chance, in perhaps one tree in tens of thousands. Until recently, supply was almost zero.
Through grafting research, we have learned to propagate trees that reliably produce Kynam-grade resin — bringing this legendary material to a wider market.
The Grafting Method — 4 Steps
1. Scion Selection
Cuttings taken from verified Kynam mother trees.
2. Rootstock Preparation
Healthy young Aquilaria trees prepared as hosts.
3. Grafting
Skilled workers join scion to rootstock.
4. Maturation
Years of monitored growth until harvest.

Black Kynam
Deep, smoky, woody.

Why Kynam matters
Among collectors and connoisseurs, Kynam is the apex grade — characterised by extreme resin density (full sinking is standard, not exceptional), a cool-sweet top with chocolate-leather depth, and an evolution on the burn that no standard agarwood matches. Top-tier Kynam at auction has exceeded gold prices weight-for-weight. Wild supply is effectively exhausted; cultivated grafted Kynam is the only growing legitimate source.
The OudLink × SCAU grafting program
In partnership with South China Agricultural University, we run a multi-year program to identify Kynam-producing parent stock, propagate via grafting, and induce resin formation under controlled conditions. The program produces semi-consistent Kynam profiles at annual yields — small relative to standard agarwood, but reliable and traceable to a specific plot.
Available varieties
Green Kynam (绿奇楠) — cool-sweet, lighter top, complex floral mid. Premium tier. Black Kynam (黑奇楠) — deeper resin, denser texture, longer burn. Standard premium tier. White Kynam (白奇楠) — rare, lightest in colour, distinctive fresh-mint top. Released only on specific harvest cycles. All grades ship with origin documentation linking the lot to the SCAU program plot.
